Videos for New RVers (and Good Safety Reviews for Experienced RVers)

by Coleen Sykora

You did the walk-through at the RV dealership. They showed you everything you need to know to operate everything on your new (or new to you) RV. You watched and nodded enthusiastically and it all made sense when the salesman was rushing through. But now, you are home. Just how is it again that you fill and empty your fresh water tank? What was it you were supposed to do if you thought you smelled a propane leak? Hmmm, what did he say that thing-a-ma-jig over there did?

One suggestion to overcome this dilemma is to videotape the walk through. That's great if you have the recording equipment, if you remember to take it along when you pick up the RV, and if you don't have problems with the taping. You also need to consider if the person leading you through actually knows enough about the RV you bought to explain things properly, if he will take the time to do it, and if you will be able to clearly capture what he says and demonstrates. That's a lot of "if"s.

A better solution is to buy a training video, one that plainly explains how RV systems work. One that answers your questions. Mark Polk of RV Education 101 produces tapes based on his experience of teaching RVers how to use their rigs. On his videos, he takes you on a walk-through, slowly and clearly showing you how your RV systems operate. You can watch them as many times as you need to. If you think you understand how something works, and later find that you don't, you can go back and review it again, as often as necessary.

Operating a motorhome is different than a pop-up, which is different than a hard-sided trailer. Mark knows about these differences and has a video for each type of RV.
